Art of the Piano is an intimate festival created and led by pianist Awadagin Pratt. It’s a platform for learning from the world’s leading artists and teachers, to perfect recital and competition repertoire, and to have a quiet, beautiful place to practice + learn.
Launched in 2011, the festival is inspired by the generous masterclasses of Franz Liszt. In this format, all the lessons are masterclasses. There are meals and gatherings with the faculty to discuss music making. A general openness is fostered in an exceptionally supportive environment.
This year’s festival focuses on the Sonatas of Beethoven, and the solo works of Franz Liszt. While performing Liszt or Beethoven is not at all required for participation, you are encouraged to come prepared to engage with Beethoven and Liszt as “Primi Inter Pares.” It was after all Liszt who said, “The name Beethoven is holy in art.” There will be an Art of the Piano Enlight Prize of $500 to the young artist who most fully embraces and embodies the spirit these two icons.
